A Message From Our
Executive Director

Hi, I am Laura Carfang, Founder, Executive Director, and Board president of Survivingbreastcancer.org. It is my pleasure to prepare and share with you our 2019 annual report showcasing the activities and programs we offer and the impact they bring to the people we serve.

Let me start by sharing a little secret with you. If we’ve exchanged phone calls, emails, text messages and late-night chats, you’ve most likely heard me say “the needle is tipping.” We are closing our second fiscal year and indeed we have increased our impact.
​
Chances are, if you are reading this report today, it is because you are one of the trailblazers that brought our organization to fruition and have helped shape it throughout 2019. We have made strategic decisions to pilot our virtual meetups, connect with more hospitals, doctors, and oncologists, serve more people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and respond to the feedback we’ve been receiving from you, our SBC members. Additionally, we have formalized processes, became consistent with our weekly newsletters that I know so many of you look forward to each Monday morning, and we have achieved the annual goals we had set out to accomplish.

I am smiling as I write this because it is easy to compose an annual report when delivering great news. Your belief in our mission enables us to execute this work. We head into our 3rd year and, if 2019 was a foreshadow of what is to come, I wholeheartedly believe that in 2020 we have the structure, resources and commitments to continue our exponential impact in the breast cancer community.

Before I get too excited about all of the programs, events, and activities we have coming out in 2020, it is with sincere gratitude and joy that I bring you our 2019 year in review. While this report talks about the numbers, behind every number is an individual who has been touched by breast cancer. It is our mission to provide empowerment through education, community and resources so that no one fights alone.

Education
Our website provides information on a variety of topics related to breast cancer ranging from prevention, diagnosis, and living with breast cancer to managing side effects, nutrition, and the importance of exercise.

Trailblazer Award
This year, we are honoring the work of Paula’s Power, spearheaded by Donna Mayo and a dedicated committee including Paula Beniers, John Porcaro, Victoria Mayo, Hope Baldi, Kim Ford, Maureen Meade, Claire Poles, Sue Pugatch, Theresa Ricciardi and Cheryl Rosberg.

Our annual Trailblazer Award recognizes outstanding SBC community members who are actively engage in one of our missions' pillars at a local level.
Donna recognized the importance of community when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She and her family have come together to create Paula’s Power in honor of her mother. Their inaugural fundraiser on September 28, 2019 was held at the Son's of Italy in Braintree, MA. The community came out in full support with over 200 attendees.
Community
Managing a breast cancer diagnosis doesn't just impact the person diagnosed, but also the family members, loved ones, friends and neighbors. Everyone manages a diagnosis differently and it can also be a very lonely time in one's life. We want to ensure that no one ever faces a diagnosis alone. We build community through our virtual patient care platform and in-person events, bringing people together to share stories, experiences, and gain support.

Resources
People seek information and support in a variety of way and we want to be sure we are adapting to platforms that our community members want. We share blogs, podcasts, and stories from those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and their caregivers.

Additionally, we don't shy from collaborate with other companies and non-profits who align with our mission. Whether you are looking for financial support, information on fertility, or rides to and from treatment, our virtual patient care platform has you covered!
